Gallup's State of the Global Workplace poll in 2013 encompassed 142 countries and 180 million employees. It found that almost a quarter of these employees were actively 'disengaged' and that only 13% of employees (or one-in-eight) feel 'engaged' at work. While alarming in terms of what this says about motivation levels at work, these results have also sparked considerable interest in how to improve them. How have we shaped workplaces that offer so little motivation and inspiration to the very people that are entrusted to make them run successfully? Well, neuroscience has plenty to say and about it - and the findings may come as a shock to some organisations.
